Academia Americană de Film a anunţat nominalizările la premiile Oscar 2018, iar „The Shape of Water“, un film cu buget redus regizat de cineastul mexican Guillermo del Toro, conduce în topul nominalizărilor, având 13 menţiuni, cu una mai puţin decât recordul înregistrat în istoria prestigioasei gale.
Filmul „Shape of Water”, pentru a cărui regie Guillermo del Toro a fost premiat cu Leul de Aur la Festivalul de la Veneţia şi cu un Glob de Aur, conduce în topul nominalizărilor la cea de-a 90-a gală a premiilor Oscar.
Lungemtrajul fantasy, despre un experiment secret din America anilor ’60, este nominalizat inclusiv la cele mai importante categorii – Cel mai bun film, Cel mai bun regizor şi Cea mai bună actriţă (Sally Hawkins). Un concurent foarte puternic este şi drama „Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri“, „răsfăţata“ Globurilor de Aur (a câştigat patru dintre cele mai importante), care este nominalizată la şapte categorii Oscar, inclusiv pentru Cel mai bun film, Cea mai bună actriţă în rol principal (Frances McDormand) şi Cel mai bun actor în rol secundar, unde concurează atât Woody Harrelson, cât şi Sam Rockwell. „Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri“ prezintă lupta unei mame îndurerate cu autorităţile locale, care nu fac progrese în prinderea ucigaşului fiicei sale. Este un film despre durere, iertare, furie şi rezistenţă. Cu toate acestea, producţia surprinde şi nenumărate momente observaţionale despre rasism, război, sexism şi o societate profund divizată.
Drama de război „Dunkirk“, a lui Christopher Nolan, se bucură de opt nominalizări la Oscar 2018, între care pentru Cel mai bun regizor şi Cel mai bun film.
Recompensat deja cu trei premii Oscar, Daniel Day-Lewis a fost nominalizat la categoria Cel mai bun actor în rol principal, pentru interpretarea din „Phantom Thread“, despre care a spus că este şi ultimul film în care joacă. De asemenea, Meryl Streep a primit cea de-a 21-a nominalizare la Oscar din carieră pentru rolul din drama „The Post“, deşi colegul său Tom Hanks şi regizorul Steven Spielberg au fost trecuţi cu vederea. Dacă va ieşi învingătoare la gala Oscar 2018, Streep, care deţine recordul de nominalizări, va avea acasă patru statuete.
